I respect your opinion. You're wrong, of course, but I respect it.

See, it doesn't matter. People try and make the argument over which is better.. when really they aren't very similar. Lord of the Rings is based in a completely fictional world, set in a time that is no where near that of Harry Potter. Lord of the Rings is more of an adventure, in the sense that the characters are constantly moving towards a predetermined goal, across countries and over mountains. Harry Potter, for the majority of the story, takes place in the walls of Hogwarts. It only ever really has this sense of adventure and imminent disaster toward the end of the series.

Harry Potter is an amazing series, but for different reasons that Lord of the Rings is. LotR is based in a world that has entire written and spoken languages, and well developed lore. LotR was created as a way to convey and popularize the Language that Tolkien had created. There are other books based in the same world, but in another age, such as the Silmarillion.

The only thing I have against Harry Potter, and a lot of the fantasy that is written now, is that the books are written with the intent of having it made into a movie. The way that authors write now is based around cinema.. which results in a lot lower quality literature. That's why I tent to prefer the classics.

it was longer, and I grew up reading the books(which got me into reading andwriting in the first place) so, while I like harry potter more, that doesnt change the fact the the LOTR is one of the most badass movie experiences of all time
User avatar #390 to #54 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
are you writing a book?
User avatar #36 to #9 - barteleiff (01/10/2013) [-]
I love Harry Potter since I grew up with the books and the movies. But I have not seen LOTR except from the first movie (many many years ago,) so I can not really argue against the people that prefers that over HP.

All they need to do is add "in my opinion" don't they?

Instead of saying "Harry potter is better than lord of the rings" straight off.

good on him.

Not really a fan of Harry Potter, but I can see your reasoning. I prefer LoTR.

An epic story about supernatural creatures and their place in modern society with humans, filled with epic battles and true love, is much better than some stupid story about a guy getting lost on the boat home and then killing a bunch of guys who tried to bang his wife.
#41 to #14 - mr skeltal (01/11/2013) [-]
Anyone notice the influence Rowling drew from Tolkien? Intentional or not, Sauron's ring is essentially a horcrux. I highly doubt she (Rowling) copied and expanded the idea on purpose, but it's impossible to ignore.
User avatar #393 to #41 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
I doubt she did, there were several horcruxes and he had to kill Voldy even when the last horcrux was gone.
#23 to #14 - discon (01/10/2013) [-]
I don't think it's fair to judge a book on how much of an impact it's had on litterature. Doing that makes a lot of "classics" seem like better books than they actually are.
#22 to #14 - mr skeltal (01/10/2013) [-]
The Ringwraiths and Nazgul are the same. The creatures they ride are Fell Beasts.

User avatar #68 to #10 - drfreeman (01/11/2013) [-]
Go ahead. I'm waiting for any kind of logical reasoning for this, otherwise I am assuming you are just ignorant the the genre of fantasy and I shouldn't take interest in your opinion anyway.
User avatar #70 to #68 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
It was just a joke, I don't like them but I'm pretty sure not everyone in the world enjoys everything I like
User avatar #394 to #70 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
fair enough, why don't you like them?
User avatar #396 to #394 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
Although I am a big mythology fan and love stuff that's all mystical and what not they never perked my interests. Everything felt a little too straight forward
User avatar #397 to #396 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
do you mean there was not much mystery? do you like "the northern lights"
User avatar #399 to #397 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
Precisely and I have never read them but I do own the trilogy, I grew up reading stuff more like Eragon, Narnia, and I did have one more in mind but I can't quite think of it. I know these aren't the best examples of fantasy but I'm also more of a gamer than a reader
User avatar #400 to #399 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
I'm reading the book now, it's alright but it's over rated I think, Narnia was a cool film I like symbolism in stories and music, what games do you like?
User avatar #401 to #400 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
Well recently I've just been replaying all the Elder Scrolls so I can refresh some of my Tamriel history but pretty much anything goes for gaming whether Fantasy or not but it is my preferred genre. Uh besides that I try to stick to shooters and very few racers. And I must agree symbolism is always a good thing to add to anything whether stories, music, films, games, etc.
User avatar #402 to #401 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
Elder Scrolls was a really good game but it gives me headaches so it's really irritating, what kind of music do you listen to?
User avatar #403 to #402 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
I was mostly rose up on electric, techno, trance surprisingly thanks to my brother. It started with Daft Punk but as more artists came out my interests started to multiply and I still listen to similar genres today. I feel bad because you are learning much about me but I'm not asking much about you in return.
User avatar #404 to #403 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
I don't mind, I do parkour, ninjitsu and write. I like real hip hop (about equality and politics) and I play A.C and prototype I'm reading deadpool at the moment
User avatar #405 to #404 - celestiasbeard (01/11/2013) [-]
It's been years since I have read Deadpool, what volume are they at now? But then again I could look that up myself. But as far as the parkour and ninjitsu go I would have to say that is pretty badass, are you good at them?
#406 to #405 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
I was good in my prime but since it was winter and my Dad has got a girlfriend who I don't like it's hard to find the motivation, I've just got into dead pool I'm literally at issue 1

That's pretty badass and mesmerizing. I had always wanted to try parkour but I already know I would be more suited for not trying to make such quick movements.
#408 to #407 - thebritishguy (01/11/2013) [-]
parkour is about finding your own way, if you have long legs you would avoid vaults like this one as you are likely to hit your legs, I think you should try it safely and see were you go from there, there's nothing to lose

I'm a rather tall and husky fellow and I think losing my teeth is a rather big loss. But who knows I might give it a couple shots, I can only imagine how big the adrenaline rush is though
User avatar #410 to #409 - thebritishguy (01/12/2013) [-]
yeah, there are tutorials on youtube, I am husky too I used to weigh 14 stone but now I'm down to 9 but I still have a wide figure, the adrenaline can be overwhelming at times especially if you are listening to good music, this is me btw www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jvb-nbwUkWc

I'm currently weighing in at 18 so I could only guess I should try to slim down a bit before making any major attempts
User avatar #412 to #411 - thebritishguy (01/12/2013) [-]
yeah, just take it one day at a time, if you go in too hard and get upset because you aren't making progress then you will become unmotivated and fail, the only way you can fail at an art is to give up, every bit of progress is a success even if you fall on your ass
