Not a paradox, but still mind-blowing as **** .

Each pixel in your screen has the possibility of being red, green, blue, or off. Your screen is made up of a finite number of pixels, however many they might be. Therefore, there are a finite number of images that your screen can display. However, the number of combinations is incomprehensibly large. Because of the good resolution of modern screens, literally any image you can imagine is one of those combinations.

And theoretically, if you went through each possible combination (Pixel #1 Red, Pixel #2 off.... etc.), you would eventually run through every imaginable image. Pictures of you at the Grand Canyon with your family, without your family, and with literally every combination of every person who has ever and ever will exist, and even people who don't. Pictures that, when sequenced, are the frames to a video of Emma Watson beating the ever living **** out of a bear on live television. Pictures that show the future, pictures of people from our past living in today's society, and each of these pictures from every possible angle and through good cameras, bad cameras, cameras with rain on the lens, etc.

I guess it kind of seems like a paradox since the possibilities seem as infinite as our imaginations, yet there are only a finite number of combinations your screen can provide.

Let's go with the standard resolution of 1920x1080. We will skip the alpha because it's only part of a virtual pixel, not a physical pixel. That leaves red, green, and blue. Each one of these channels has an 8-bit value. 2 ^ 8 = 256 (possible levels of light emitted from the part of the pixel). 256 * 256 * 256 = 16777216 (equivalent to 24-bit color depth (the only reason 32-bit color exists is because of the 8-bit alpha channel of a pixel)). 1920 * 1080 * 16777216 = 3.47892351*10^13 = 34,789,235,100,000 (approximately) different images that could possibly be on a screen of this resolution.

This works with music too. In one 5 minute audio clip, there are 2^211,000,000 possible combinations of sounds. That includes the sound of every conversation you've had with your parents, it includes the clacking noise on your keyboard when you wrote any of your comments on funnyjunk, it includes the sounds of Emma Watson beating a bear (in case mctrollston was wondering), it includes the sound of a monkey having vigorous sex to a toaster while Stairway to Heaven plays in the background near a bowling alley. To elaborate, 2^211,000,000 is 63 million digits long. But that is, however, a finite number.

If you take the number of combinations for an RGB pixel, you get 24 bits, ie. 256^3 = 16777216 possible colours for each pixel.
To get the total possible number of images you raise that to the power of the number of pixels on the screen.

So for a 1280x720 screen that gives
7.1795000302082985714379879152117203426292750 × 10^6658301
possible image combinations.
Which while being a stupendously big number, is still finite

For a screen that could only display red, green, blue or off, which is 4 possible values for each pixel. It would give 4^(1280*720) possible image combinations.
Or 3.07615241757905628540939820534586310217606314 × 10^554858
Significantly less than regular RGB but still a stupendous number.

If we had a 4x4 display (16 pixels) that could only display red, green, blue or off, it still gives 4^16 = 4294967296 combinations for a 4x4 display.
Simply staggering.

I physical pixel doesn't just do red, green, blue, or off. Each channel (red, green, and blue) of a physical pixel can have different levels of light that it emits. For the usual screen, each channel of a pixel has 256 levels of light it can emit because an 8-bit value is stored in the virtual pixel for the channel. 2 ^ 8 = 256. Three channels (red, green, and blue). 256 ^ 3 = 16777216. He chose a screen resolution of 1280x720.
