In my catholic grade school, we were taught chickens came first because god created all the animals and blah blah blah.

They came at exactly the same time. Evolution, just like Jedi, doesn't deal in absolutes. (Well, it kinda does, but not in this case. There was never a first of any species, ever. It's too gradual for that.)
