Oh boy, it's unpopular opinion time!
In my opinion, you can't blame people for their reactions. Whenever you do something, you have to be willing to except the consequences. For example, if you cut yourself, people are going to call you emo. If you're smart, people will call you a nerd. And if you go out frequently wearing very little clothing, people will call you a slut. I'm not saying it's right. I myself try not to judge people before I get to know them. However, it does happen, and you can't do anything that is "unacceptable" with out expecting people to react in a close-minded way. And if you know you're unable to handle that kind of attention, then you should think again about what you're doing, because complaining about "society", or how mean people are, or citing your own depression as a reason why people should quit reacting to what they see in a way that makes sense to them. Again, I'm not saying that's right, but if all you're asking is for everyone you meet to be 100% accepting, you're gonna be waiting for a long time because there's a ton of assholes out there. Just my two cents.

Also, I'm not saying you should let other people's judgements decide what you do, just that you have to be prepared for their reactions whenever you do something that's out of the norm for society.
