I pirate and am against DRM but this is stupid logic.

Mainly because a file (without DRM) can be copied as many times as you like.

Let's say I copy it for 5 friends plus my original. That equals 600% of the original amount. With the coffee you get 100% before you have to buy some more. So when you share it with a friend, you have to sacrifice some yourself.

Another thing you're not considering is that coffee has it's limitations so that it's rare that anyone does the things that you suggest. Do you honestly buy a copy then give samples out?



Also I'm pretty sure the original picture is talking about buying stuff on CD as well as downloads (10-12 songs per album and the cost of packaging = around about the same rate per song).

I agree with the second point but the first one isn't correct.

But say only 1 is bought. You can't copy coffee so that 6 people can use it, but you can copy an .mp3.

You still own that .mp3 file, but the DRM is to stop an infinite number of friends owning it without paying for it.

I don't see how you can say that the people you are pirating off deserve it for trying to prevent you giving their product away free. It's a pain in the ass for moving it around yeah, that's why I don't like DRM, but I'm pretty sure that offence isn't as worthy of a "hearty fuck you" as your offence of giving your friends their product free of charge.


On a different note:

Could you imagine if the process of piracy was so efficient that as soon as 1 person has a copy, it can be made that 99% of the population own it?

Imagine yourself as an artist hoping to make a living out of it... You sell 1 copy for $1 and then everyone has it.

Now the only people making music are the one's who have a steady (and overly large, judging by the cost of studio time) income elsewhere. Sure, there's now a focus on live music, the record labels have gone bust and the people producing music don't consider it a business, but is it really fair that small time musicians can't earn money from sales or that poorer people can't get into it at all?

Also the picture isn't related to the music business at all...

I don't say that people deserve it for putting DRM in their files, but I would prefer my music with no restrictions on how I use it for myself.
And if person "A" was never going to buy a MP3 by Band "C" ever, and person "B" gave them a copy of the song, nothing was stolen from "C", Band C never lost a penny, because person A was never going to buy it anyways.
However if B did prevent A from buying the song from C, by giving A a free song, then yes that could be looked at as theft.

I used to think exactly like that. They never lost money, but essentially you are creating a new product and giving it to person A. But it's not yours to give. And before you say that you can legally give someone the coffee you just bought make a note of the fact that Person B will still have their copy of the song.

By doing that you are deciding, for the band, to give out free samples/product. That's not your decision to make is it?

By the way I do all of this, but I realise that it's morally wrong, and I don't try to defend.

I am not saying it's right, but if some one was really never going to buy it unless it was free the producer never lost anything.

There are two more things to say:

If person A hasn't ever experienced artist C, then piracy acts more like advertising - I mean, if person A has some of their product, he's more likely to spend money than if he never comes into contact with the band.

And the other thing is that you can't really say they will never buy a song. The chances might be low, but they're zero if person A has a copy already...

they are not zero if they have a copy already, for example I pirate allot of games that don't have demos before I buy them, and a lot of movies too. I always watch a movie online before I take my son to the theater, they are always sneaking in weird shit don't want my 6 year old to see or hear.
And then if it is any good I will buy the bluray or the game or whatever it is, because it's good.
So just because you got a free copy doesn't reduce the chances of ever buying it to zero.
But if some one legitimately would have never bought it otherwise, for whatever reason, nothing was lost, this doesn't mean it's okay.

Also you seem like a cool guy, we can talk like normal people hanging out in a coffee shop or something. This is a nice deviation from the regular Internet fights.

ya take the good with the bad..we have a few stations here that only play rock music..i dont even hear a nicki minaj song...i dont know if you have those in your city...but if you dont the have these cords and what nots that allow you to play your own music through your car speakers..uncensored and commercial free! amazing aint it?
