I personally wouldn't find this as an amusing anecdote, at least not until 5 years later or so. I'd take something like this seriously, but maybe I just have a more conversationally open relationship with my mom and I find this more shocking than others.
I always prefer if my mom has any issue with what I'm doing, or if she wonders how/who I am, to talk to me. That way I can dispel any bullshit immediately and explain my stance if she doesn't understand me. It doesn't always work well but I like it better than whispers behind my back.
I understand now not everybody has the same type of relationship I may have.
