Norwegian exchange student

It has to do with culture. Part of the formula is that the country you're from is part of the culture you were born into. That culture has a impact on you as an individual. Who you are, where you come form, the person you'll grow up to be, your genetics are all a reflection of your culture, and most countries can identify themselves as being part of the culture, so people aren't so much proud of the land mass they come from, but rather the culture they are a part of.

Now there are millions of immigrants that move to other countries: USA, Canada, UK Australia etc. They weren't born there but they are proud to be apart of that country. That's not coincidence that's a choice. The people that are generally the "most proud" to be Americans are usually those that are first or second generation because they choose to be Americans.

Also throughout history people were discriminated against for where they came from. Yes in a way this was racism. The people that are generally most proud are the people that come from countries/cultures that were historically exploited and abused by other peoples. The Irish for example. A lot of people are proud to be Irish cause for centuries they were abused just because they were Irish. Mexicans suffered under Spanish rule but are proud and really show that pride more so than most other people. Canadians, who are without a doubt the most nationalistic people I've ever met, are proud to be Canadian because they were looked down upon by the British cause they were nothing more than colonials and they are constantly in America's shadow.

So a short, what I'm saying it is a way of people feeling pride in themselves for who they are.

The educational system is flawed indeed, but it's not most horrible. Zimbabwe has a horrible educational system. Ours is good, but improvable.

Our prisons are used for rehabilitation, not punishment. And it has been proven to work. It reduces the criminal recidivism. A lot. I'd rather have former criminals be put to use than to rot away in jail.

Same here. Going to admit it, I often put on a "mainstream mask" when I'm outside or at school. I've just flowed with the stream for a very long time, but recently I've gotten more idealistic. I've laid plans for the gathering of enlightened people in the future, for perhaps starting the establishment for a new society. But that's currently just dreams and ideas. There's not much I can do at the moment, unfortunately, I'm just a high school student.

Hmm, yeah, I think I recognize some of these problems from ungdomskolen. The educational system is flawed in Scandinavia, as well as pretty much everywhere else. Except from Finland, I've heard, is doing a pretty good job on that, though its definitely not yet perfect. The reason for the suckyness of education is because of mainstream capitalism, like usual, I believe.

Our schools are flawed because our governments care about profits. Everything is systematical, and does not focus on the students' actual intelligence and progress. Everything has to be profitable, and as least costy as possible. In a resource-based economy this wouldn't be a problem at all.
