the cell they fight is from the future, hiched a ride on trunkses time machine after reverting back to larvl form(he had to to time travle for some reason) then hid somewear for a long while as he grew back to imperfect cell
they ended up destroying the cell from there timeline before its finnished

In the timeline that Cell was in everyone was dead. Majin Buu could not have been brought back to life has there was no energy for Babidi to feed off. ~Magenta

This is actually implied though because if you remember Goku told Future Trunks that he was going to instant transmission to earth to stop Freeza and King Cold but when he sense Trunks there he decided not to.

He had King Cold and Freeza from when Goku killed them on Earth in his timeline. Broly and Cooler are non-cannon so yeah
