Even though this doesn't make sense, I am going to rationalize it.

Mudcrabs are not a immediate threat to your life. Hiring someone else to go kill them since you are a merchant makes sense. If a dragon attacks your town you either try and help kill it or lose everything you have.

I think if fists were the only weapon on me I'd take the "lose everything I have" route, especially when there's that guy armed to the teeth right there that you just asked to kill some mudcrabs.
