The show is meant for little girls (sorry guys, but it is; stop pretending otherwise). A Sauron-esque villain, who's presence is always felt despite them never actually making an appearance, is a bit too complex for the intended audience to grasp.

No, Sombra is simply the product of bad writing, and unless they can pull something great out of their ass to make up for his appearance in that mediocre season premiere, I don't want to see him return.

You're right when you say the show is meant for little girls, but keep in mind that as time has gone on, it has become more and more dedicated to the brony fan base. The episode "Magic Duel" had a million fan based references in it, for example. I think it's unfair to say at this point that it's still "meant for little girls", especially with how season 3 is being handled.

It IS still meant for little girls, bro. The fact that the show has focused more and more on pleasing us bronies does not change the fact that it's primary targeted audience is still younger girls; it's just become aware that grown men are watching it as well and has adapted to that.

And honestly, I don't WANT the show to become more dedicated to the bronies. The shout-outs to the fans worked in season two, when they were still being balanced out by messages on par with those of season one, but season three has been focusing too much on pleasing the fan base by integrating stuff we wanted to see. We got Cadance and Shining Armor to return; the episodes sucked balls. Trixie came back; the episode was okay. Rainbow Dash joined the Wonderbolts Academy; the episode was mediocre. Discord is returning; I've seen a lot of bronies complain that the episode is going to be bad. The only really good episodes this season have been "Sleepless in Ponyville" and "Apple Family Reunion", and maybe "Too Many Pinkie Pies" (which loses points for being a Pinkie Pie episode).

I get that they want to please the fan base, but attempting to please the fan base too much is what kills TV shows. They need to focus on the stuff that made us fall in love with the series in the first place, and keep the shout-outs to the bronies at a minimum.

The problem is that we're told he is really dangerous and evil, but we don't really see that. I usually say that he could have been replaced with a glacier (possibly a magical one) slowly coming towards the city to crush it and it wouldn't really change anything.

They did not characterize him well.
