Did you know the tradition of clinking glasses was from the olden days when assassins were prevalent, people would clink beers with the idea being that beer from each cup goes into the other mans cup, proving it was not poisoned.

That is false
People long ago lived in bigger families so when they were having a meal all would gather around and drink was poured in one bowl/cup and was passed around. Later on smaller cups were used but before drinking starts everyone would join their cups as a simbolic gesture that they are still drinking as one from one cup. We would greet people by first outstretching our right hand. This would show people from a distance that your hand was no where near your sword.
