But Sonic is faster in the game. That's why you are constantly leaving him behind. At least I always did.

They really aren't. When you play as Tails he is a bit slower but can jump higher (you obviously can't fly while using him). When the computer is using him he still slightly slower just like when you control him. Also, Knuckles is the slowest and jumps the least high, but he is also able to climb walls and glide. And yes, you WERE able to use Knuckles in Sonic 2, but you needed to put Sonic 2 inside of the Sonic 3 cartage on the Sega.
