Actually, probably not. Most scientists who actually make advances in scientific fields are usually too busy working to be interviewed or their boss takes all the credit. The plus side is no one blames you if what you made kills someone.

Steve Jobs is one of the most influential persons in IT history, comparable to Bill Gates or Richard Stallman. Kinda obvious we would hear about him.

Because he was undoubtely kind of terrible person (known to fire his employees just because he wasn't in mood), he really had influence in last decades in IT industry. He was behind the success of Apple II computer (introduced in 1977 and was one of, if not the longest selling computer ever - it was discontinued in 1993). Yes, Steve Wozniak designed both Apple I and Apple II (he was very good programmer back then, he programmed Apple I on paper before he even bought needed parts), but they would be forgotten without Jobs, as Wozniak had no intentions to sell the computer. That started the boom of (in that days) cheap easily programmable computers, e.g. legendary Sinclair ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64. Apple really had huge influence there, as they managed to survive years after years, compared to Sinclair or Commodore, who quickly declined from PC market. Especially because of Jobs, who was CEO by that time (later he got fired, but he was hired again because Apple was in huge crap and they bought his company NeXT and their OS was used as base of Mac OS X).
But the first really huge succes was the first Macintosh released in 1984, which was first commercially successful computer featuring GUI and mouse (there is a different story about how they got the idea for it, Apple haters are saying that Apple stole the idea from Xerox, but in reality Apple paid 1 million dollars for access to Xerox labs, where they could copy the GUI). By that time Microsoft had only MS-DOS, which was command-line based. The competition of Microsoft+IBM and Apple helped to evolve GUI operating systems (soon the first Windows were released) and you probably know the rest of story.

You just said it. He found the money for it. Great products are nothing without money to back them up. And he was marketing genius, everyone knows that. His methods were sometimes bad, but he knew, how to sell the products.

That doesn't make him the most influential person in the IT industry. That makes him one of the most successful people in the advertising industry, which he is.

He is key person behind Apple, which sells computer sotfware, PC's and electronics, which kind of makes it IT company. It's not the traditional IT company like IBM, it's more for consumers, but it's still IT company.

Yes Apple is an IT company and yes Steve Jobs is the key person behind it, but he is not the most influential person on the industry because he has minimal actual influence on it. He funds other people to influence it and then sells their stuff, he doesn't actually make any of it. Just because he's related to the project and even if he's technically in charge of the project doesn't make it his project, whoever is doing most of the actual design work gets credit for it.

I can't disagree with the credit for the design point. Just remember that he actually made it possible with his excellent management. Don't forget that every company needs the marketing part, as it needs its development part. You can't sell excellent product without marketing and vice versa. Although Apple is slowly declining in last years with the development, mostly in iPhone part. :/

I agree with you completely on all of that, it's just I give engineering bucketloads more credit for progress than I do marketing. Steve Jobs works in the IT industry, and has had an influence on it, but he is by no means the most influential.

I know development part is very important, I'm studying computer sciences to be software engineer/programmer, so I know how much hard work is behind it and I respect your opinion, but I think it's debatable about the influence. We can relate it to Bill Gates too, as he isn't known for his work as programmer (you probably know the story behind DOS), but mostly for his work as CEO of Microsoft, so both Jobs and Gates had pretty much same job (actually, as opposed to great competition between Microsoft and Apple, they were great friends, although they had different opinions). And I think you can't disagree with Bill Gates being the one of the most important people in IT industry.

Despite how much I dislike Steve Jobs, you're wrong. The first iPhone was revolutionary and pretty much made the touch screen phone popular. Every apple product after that was just a copy of that with no innovation but it's a lie to say Steve Jobs didn't do anything.
