sounds dumb, but they climb down to poop to be able to bury it and avoid leaving a discernible scent trail to foil predators because let's face it, they're not going to run away or anything. and the starving with a full stomach thing generally only happens when the temperature drops below a certain point (something that doesn't happen to often in the rain forests) because their slow metabolism doesn't enable them to regulate their body temps.
