Making gay marriage legal doesn't increase the make the state gay, it just allows the gay people already living there to marry each other.

Why does this have so many thumbs? The alternative to what he said would be mandated gay marriage for EVERYONE.

but that's wrong the gay population will increase as more gay people from other states move there to get married and settle down in a more accepting place. also people like the yahoo op will move away lowering the straight population sharply increasing the gay to straight ratio

tl:dr gays come to marry straight people leave to avoid them

gay marriage is legal in Maryland, and I haven't seen alot of gay people. Maybe in Washington D.C, but not here.
User avatar #27 to #10 - dickbewt (12/28/2012) [-]
The gay population can't really increase.
What will they do? **** out a baby?
User avatar #63 to #27 - wiredguy ONLINE (12/28/2012) [-]
People will probably feel slightly more open about it, thus the amount of open gays will increase, I think was the idea.
Plus I imagine being surrounded by perfectly accepted gay adults as a child would very slightly increase the chance of the child growing up to be gay, but over such a massive population this would make some difference.
User avatar #24 to #10 - semisane (12/28/2012) [-]
correction: gay couples move there to marry, dumbass bigots leave to avoid them. So really, legalizing gay marriage will help any state that does it.
User avatar #18 to #10 - BerwindTwentyFour (12/28/2012) [-]
a lot of gay couples will get married in another state and move back.
the act of marriage is illegal for homosexuals, not the state of being married.

Maybe in the South straight people would move away, but in states where most people's wives aren't related to them, all the legalization of gay marriage would do is increase the population -- thus increasing the economy of said state.

Maybe in the North you're all dickheads who think everyone in the South hates gays.
Leave my cousin/wife out of this.
Pro-gay marriage and from Georgia.

Also from Georgia, also pro-gay marriage.

A lot of people would haul ass if gays could marry down here. I personally think it sounds wonderful and we should push it at quickly as possible. Imagine how many people would be gone.....

Actually, since this is the internet and he's pro-gay, he probably is one.
#9 to #8 - aludin (12/28/2012) [-]
gay and faggot are two different things.
User avatar #62 to #9 - wiredguy ONLINE (12/28/2012) [-]
Well, gay and faggot don't mean anything different as nouns, they're both mean "a homosexual person (esp. a male one)", they just have different intentions behind them.

The same goes for ****** and African-American/black or, whatever.

I have nothing against either group, I just hate it when people say there's a difference, because there isn't, the only difference is what you're trying to say when you use the word.
#69 to #62 - pebar (12/28/2012) [-]
Communication is simply transferring information. People know what they means when they call people faggots, for example. While faggot may have the same definition as gay, that's just a technicality; people don't use it in the same way so they're not really the same thing.
User avatar #82 to #69 - wiredguy ONLINE (12/28/2012) [-]
I recognise that, and agree with your point wholly.
People just say that there is a difference with such conviction that it comes across as if it is documented fact.
The reason we have a dictionary is for a standardisation of the language, without standardisation there can be a lot of confusion, like charging adaptors for instance (I'm doing an ICT A level, don't let me get started on hardware standardisation).

What you say may be exactly true in your social circles, but overall most people who don't spend a lot of time thinking about their views on homosexuality or using the word "faggot" as a general insult don't see it as such, and these people are the majority.
The correct way of separating the words is to say that the only difference is that "faggot" is demeaning and "gay" is a point of fact.

In fact, the reason your picture makes so much sense is that NPH deserves respect and the men on the right (based on what little information we have about them) deserve our contempt. But this is all assuming you have no problems with homosexuality, by many people standards, all homosexuals fit into the right-hand category because it is a sin, or unnatural, or whatever.
Hence it makes more sense not to actually set a definition for each word, but to say that they mean the same thing and your personal choice of word should be based on your feeling towards the subject.

Sorry for the Great Wall of Text... I'm tired as hell and not really up to condensing.

Have you ever heard of "connotation"? Connotation is the suggesting of a meaning by a word apart from the thing it explicitly names or describes, and it is perfectly acceptable to use the connotation of a word rather than the denotation while speaking/writing. The two words may have the same denotation, but they have completely different connotations, and nearly everyone understands that.
User avatar #182 to #170 - wiredguy ONLINE (12/28/2012) [-]
I agree to an extent but people say it as if they actually believe the denotations to be separate in some way, it irritates me is all.
Besides, the connotation of "faggot" isn't nearly that specific, "gay" is neutral and "faggot" is negative, that is as far as the difference in connotations goes. The way people describe the difference is so specific as to even describe the individual attributes and habits of a "faggot", delving incorrectly into the realms of denotation and official definition. It is much simpler to say they have the same meaning only the latter is used as a means of disparagement, whatever the actual situation.
Neil Patrick Harris is a faggot to some people because they believe he is sinning or doing something unnatural, that breaks their rule of specific connotation yet still makes perfect sense in my rule of intention, see?
User avatar #192 to #182 - xxxdemongirl (12/28/2012) [-]
Have you ever seen that episode of South Park? The one where the gang explains that most fags aren't gay, and "fag" is redefined as an obnoxious, inconsiderate person? This is the connotation that most people associate with it. No one gives a damn about the dictionary definition anymore, kind of like when it comes to the word " ****** "
User avatar #204 to #192 - wiredguy ONLINE (12/28/2012) [-]
I have seen that one, the biker one?
That doesn't stop it from being wrong though :P

One day people are Grammar Nazis, the next "no one gives a damn about dictionary definition".
Make your mind up internet.
