Van Gogh painted "starry night" while in an asylum. There is speculation that while staring out the window at night and down to the town past the hills, another occupant in the asylum several floors above jumped from her window and just so happened to pass by Van Gogh's window. The dark "structure" seen at the left of the painting is not an actual building at all, but the girls hair flailing behind her as she fell to her death.

It's not supposed to be a building, it's a cypress tree.

>Girl passes through view for about a second
>Wastes about 5 minutes drawing her hair instead of the background
I think he would've just waited for a second even if that was 100% true.

Or...you know..it made him rethink the composition of the painting to better suit what he was trying to portray. Maybe her hair flowing against the sky for that split second could have inspired him to create something better than what he originally had wanted to paint.

You kind of missed the whole point of it being art.

If you guys believe this **** you are gullible as **** . Yeah, he painted it in an asylum, but there isn't anything anywhere backing up what anoldfriend said.

Knew it was fake. But it was a good fake story to tell kids around a campfire =)

Neither is there anything anywhere saying it didn't. We'll never know the real reason as to why he painted it and what the black figure in the painting is. It was just one of the explanations that i heard and it makes for a really creepy tale.

That's not true, it's a cyprus tree.

So the word "speculation" nothing to you? I never said it was true, it's just a hypothesis as to how he came about painting it.

I don't think there are any theories about this. I mean, it's pretty clear that it'sjust a ****** tree
