Lifespans:
Gamecube wavebird controller- 3 years of battery life and can last for your entire childhood
Xbox/PS3 controller- 3 days of battery life and Id give the edge to Xbox because it's more sturdy
Wii Mote- 3 minutes and you have to buy a new one and a new TV cuz wriststraps are for pussies

the stock xbox controller works with batteries where the PS3 is charged with USB so IMO that's a huge plus

I'm also pretty sure that both xbox and ps3 controllers last for more than 3 days. I really can't say how long the ps3 controller lasts because I always just plug it in to my ps3 when I don't play or I have it plugged in all the time

Have people not heard about the play and charge kits? For €20 you get a battery pack that you just re-charge via USB - If it's running low mid gaming, just plug in the wire to the top of the controller and keep going.
I don't understand why people wouldn't buy it. You're paying way more to get a set of batteries every week.

I've had the same batteries in my XBOX controller for 3 months and I play for 1-2 hours every night.

That is why I like PS3 controllers, because they can be plugged in and still play. I have 2 15 foot USB extension cords to help out =)

I know wired ones exist. Last I checked (quite a while ago) you could not get wireless that can charge while playing is all.

That's what I use right now actually. It's a rechargeable battery pack that I just leave plugged into the xbox while I play

Same, I'd used the other rechargeable wireless ones I had to the extent that the charge lasted the large amount of 30 seconds.
