You dont actually have to be personally involved in a situation to have an opinion in it.

I actually am equally impressed that the guy comes from a familly that is so well known for their hate on so many groups and individuals and turns out to be totally different and actually go against his own family because he thinks what they do is wrong.

If we are going to have opinions on people we know nothing about then... It's a classic case of stifling ones individuality. There are many people who have had religion and other things forced down their throat and then they rebel against their oppressors or parent. Doesn't seem remarkable at all to me, it's a part of human nature.
