He had a skin condition that caused parts of his skin to turn white, and had his skin bleached to cover it up. Since it would be easier to remove pigment than to put it back in, I guess.

but being an atheist doesn't make him a better (or worse) person. it just means he's rebelling against his parents.
the other things, such as being an activist for the lgbt community and speaking out against child abuse make him better in that he's advocating tolerance and humane treatment for children.
