mfw i watched the new episode
Answers a lot of questions, such as why wasn't RD made a Wonderbolt earlier or invited to the academy (which has very low recruiting standards from what the episode has shown) earlier? and Why didn't spitfire recognize RD's incredible abilities as the only pony to do a sonic boom and save her entire team?

My half arsed theory:
The wonderbolts are about working as a cohesive unit, as 1. When they are in the skies, they lose all their individuality and are simply 1 team. Rainbow Dash, however, is 'the best flier in ponyville, no wait, equestria', so she wouldn't work so well in the team. That is why she isn't already a wonderbolt.
