Well, there was those 22 kids that got knifed in China on the same day that much fewer people knew about or mentioned.
But you have to remember that America is supposed to be a beacon of civilization; it's the most influential, and so everything that highlights the fact that it isn't a shining utopia is a very bright highlight. When you hear about terrible things happening in China, you think "Oh, that's kind of normal, it's China."
