Dude, it all makes sense now.

Pac-Man takes the pills because he has anxiety and paranoia, the ghosts are just a figment of his imaginations. Eventually, the pills work (when he eats the big pill), but only for a short time, allowing him to turn the tables and face his fears. Sadly, this is only a temporary fix and he must continue the rest of his life, taking these pills hoping that eventually, they will work permanently.


that or it's just a fucking video game and i'm over-analyzing it.....
