It wasnt invented for the purpose of testing vegetables. It was invented for human use and he just chose here to demonstrate on a tomato seeing as he was a horticulturist, knowing that plants were alive, they would have a reaction.

There was an experiment that proved that plants could sense "intentions". While connected to a i-dont-know-what-the-fuck the guy wanted to test how they reacted under stressed. So while it ws connected he started to think about what he could do to the plant, when he decided that he was going to burn it, the plant reacted and became stressed, just as he chose to burn it. Check the experiment online, I realize this story isn't enough for you to believe it.
