There is a waiting list years long to visit him supposedly. Anthony Keidis of the red hot chili peppers went to just visit the temple and requested to see him and was turned down. When the Dali Lama himself heard who was there, he went and met him immediately because he loved the chili peppers. TL;DR The red hot chili peppers have the dali lama's blessing. how epic is that.

it wasn't the group, it was specifically the singer, and the dali lama was aware of their music and it meant something to him. Pretty much he was in awe of seeing a celebrity/idol.
