The rainforest ground is extremely fertile for crops, but only for a short time. So prospective farmers cut down a lot every year.

Lumber for building. Plus, clear cutting is becoming a lot rarer, apposed to selective cutting.

I guess we're headed the right way then! Of course if we used less of the wood from tree farms for paper, it could be used for building, so we ain't saints, but one step at a time i guess

Well the tree farm trees are thin, not really large enough to use for large scale building. The trees have to be able to grow large in only (10-20?) years for it to be renewable, and you can't get large trees to grow that fast. Really we need to just do more selective logging, and really, not let every uneducated redneck with an axe start a cutting business would help a lot.
