I watched every episode and I do not remember them showing zuko.

zuko is still alive. he's 84. Aang died at 66 but the official reason behind that is that being stuck in the avatar state for 100 years in the iceberg took a physical toll on his body.

Makes sense, which makes the ages of everyone else more plausible in relation to Korra

Tenzin and Lin are both 51. and i believe katara is 83 or 82.

Well when Avatar TLA was being written, they knew there was going to be multiple seasons, so the paced the story telling appropriately. which is a huge part of what makes a show successful. It's like the difference between reading a book and having someone tell you what happens. You wind up with the same basic info, but the pacing and details aren't there and the over all impact of the story is lessened.

In Avatar LOK it was only supposed to be one season, kind of a gift to the fans of the original. Knowing that, it became very important to tell a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end in a very short amount of time and the story suffered for it. One of the best examples of this I can think of is how I think in only episode 2 or 3 Korra is making googoo eyes at Mako. In the original, I dont think Aang even knew the difference between boys and girls until very near the end of the first season.

When a story is more involved, you gain a deeper connection to a character because you see the growth, the little subtle changes in their personality and you identify with that cause thats how it works in real life. you dont go to bed as a kid and wake up the next morning with a deep, meaningful understanding of adult relationships.

It's going to get better though, cause the next seasons (2 or 3 of them I cant remember) the writers know they have more time to work with, and they can pace the story more appropriately. Considering how much I loved the first season of LOK even with it's limitations, I cannot WAIT to see how the next season turns out.

I see what you mean, but it isn't like Bryke thought he would have more. He knew from the bat he would have 12 episodes to work with. Knowing this he still went ahead and added too much to handle, especially with the romance. He created a piss-poor romance that did NOTHING to benefit the plot, broke the 'Show not Tell' rule by having to inform us Mako liked Korra though there had never been any sign, screwed over the additional characters, etc. As a writer you have to work with what you're given and work it well.

Had romance been dropped it would have gone so much better, but because it was so much of it there was no character development, bonding moments between audience/show, or anything extra spectacular. Bryke went overboard with emphasis on the sub-plot of romance and ignored the important stuff.

TL;DR 12 episodes isn't an excuse when you're a writer you work with what you're given

I agree with you, honestly I think if they had just focused on the conflict between benders and non and fleshed that out more then it would have been a stellar season. They tried to pack everything the old Avatar had into one season and flubbed it.

But I still enjoyed it, even knowing that it wasn't what it could have been, it was still good. And I think that is a credit to the team behind avatar, even when they mess things up the result is better than most of everything else out there. You KNOW you're doing something right when your mistakes are better than everyone else's best effort.
