I like how so many People hate on Arts, it´s like, Yeah, Art Students are useless and stupid, Imma gonna make tons of money, so I can let someone design me a great House, with Designer-Furniture, have my Walls full of expensive Pictures, spent my Time reading exclusive Literature, watching movies, etc, etc. Where the Hell does everybody think do the Things they want to enjoy with their money come from?

"Design me a great house" would be architecture. Where I come from, that isn't art school.
English literature isn't art, and neither is media...

From what I gather, art school is about: illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, and graphic design.
So it could easily be a gateway to journalism, the film industry, or architecture. But not the main route.
Graphic design, sure, that would be used for furniture design, toys, games, films etc... But I think the point is, there aren't that many vocations available for artists.

I think its about the art school thing. Art can easily be learned on your own, once you know how to use your eyes and tools. Shouldnt a nice portfolio be better than having a degree in art?

There are too many things to art to learn on your own. Sure, it is possible (hell, nearly everything is..) but it's very hard.
Many people think learning art is just doodling and that's what art student do... when it's not. It's a LOT of work and a LOT of practice and a LOT of theory.

And nearly all decent companies ask for a degree when they hire artists. Also, I, for example, like to feel like a professional in what I do...

I have never needed anyone but myself. I'm not the best, and not super talented, but i know how to get there. Composition, color balance and other balances, depth.. I dont see how this isnt possible to learn on your own. Art is personal. Get your tools and eyes, and make something. When you can that, and full well know what to improve on, what your goal is, and how to make your art your own, and how to learn anatomy and such, then theres nothing that anyone else can contribute with to your art.
My thoughts anyhow
