fun facts:
5 drinks for men, 4 drinks for women to be considered "binge drinking" (also depends on the rate of consumption)
America has an average 'volume of alcohol consumed per capita', but is incredibly high on alcohol abuse problems
something around 38% of college students binge drink occasionally
26% binge drink frequently
17% drink occasionally
8-10% don't drink at all

"5 drinks" is an incredibly vague statement. What like, 5 shots of shitty vodka? 5 beers? Is this for the whole night? Did they start drinking at 6? When did they stop?

if you've taken any college alcohol education program they give you fluid ounce quantities of what a drink is depending on what type of alcohol you're drinking, wine/beer/liquor

i am unfortunate enough to have not gone to college yet

The meaning of five drinks changes depending on the percentage of alcohol in it. So it's usually around the same.
User avatar #38 to #33 - darthtomale (12/07/2012) [-]
but "drink" is still an undefined term. Lets say you have one glass with 8 fl oz of uncut vodka at 35% alcohol and one glass that has 4 fl oz of everclear. 5 drinks of one the same as five of the other. Furthermore (lol, furthermore), what you begin drinking at 5pm and dont stop until 3 am? Is it still binge drinking if you have five drinks? What if you do all five at once and dont drink for the rest of the day?

The percentage of alcohol is relative to the amount of drinks. 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol is considered one drink. 1.5 fluid ounces of vodka, rum, whiskey, etc., five of wine, or twelve of beer is each considered by the standard one drink. In order for it to be binge, you'd have to have it over a short period of time. And as long as you have the five drinks, I don't see how friends influence it.

I thought the definition of "binge drinking" was not drinking much/at all during the week and then drinking during the weekend?
User avatar #9 to #3 - sphinxe (12/06/2012) [-]
Ah, I think they mean on a regular basis, like 5 or so drinks every day for a whole week.

5 drinks based on what volume per drink? And what intensity of alcohol changes the volume desired to be considered one drink? I'm sure it's hardly considered binge drinking if a friend drinks 5, 16 fl oz Smirnoff ices compared to another's 5, 40 fl oz steel reserves. Come on, SPECIFY!!!!

if you want a general definition of 'drink' it's 1 shot = 1 glass of wine = 1 beer
User avatar #51 to #50 - justtoobasic (12/07/2012) [-]
That's not specific. WHAT VOLUME? I need ounces to appropriately use this information to my advantage, so, shut up.

as a basis 1 shot = 1 oz, very basic knowledge

the standard measurement in "1 drink" is 1,6cl of pure alcohol
if I remember american standard right that should be 1 fl oz of 80 proof spirit = 0,75 "drinks"

technically it's not binge drinking if i never stop....

care to classify what binge drinking means? (I take it it's quickly? )
User avatar #7 to #4 - adxminisgay **User deleted account** (12/06/2012) [-]
drinking in excess essentially, depends on the rate at which you drink and # of drinks
User avatar #6 to #4 - adxminisgay **User deleted account** (12/06/2012) [-]
