I believe it is not free. You must buy Arma 2 in order to play. Arma 2 is available on Steam. After that you have to download the actual DayZ mod for the game. dayzmod.com/ I think there is a tutorial on the site. If not you can google tutorials. Hope I helped.

Dayz does work pirated I'd know, you just need to run tunngle lan servers or find cracked servers (rare but exist) also it's not just Arma 2 people you also need to buy Operation Arrowhead.

Dayz is a Free mod! Sadly, it requires Arma 2 And Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead to work!
Those can be bought in bulk as Arma 2 Combined Operations.

Right now it is a free mod for the game Arma II (You need the Combined Operations bundle - Available on Steam), then it can be installed super easy using a program called DayZCommander.

But there is a Standalone version of the game to be released on steam soon, apparently set to follow the Minecraft pricing structure (Cheaper in Alpha, free updates etc). So you may want to wait for that.

Arma 2 Combined Operations is €25 or so at the moment, up to you if you wanna wait or not :)

1.) The Mod is, you need ArmA 2 and Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead (a standalone), those cost money. Or you get Arma 2 Combined Ops which includes Operation Arrowhead and the original game

2.) This month there will be the release of the DayZ Standalone on Steam which will cost money, but you don't need to buy the main game

so if they are releasing a standalone for dayz and i have the current arma 2 oa with the dayz mod will they standalone be different servers or will they be mixing everything together?

Kind of adding to mrjbrowns answer there is going to be a DayZ standalone coming out, now in December i think.

i have both dayz and warz. so far dayz has a better map with easier loot spots but still just as dangerous because of other players. warz's loot points kinda low right now the map is still expanding so it will get better. in dayz you can find broken down cars and fix them and drive them even find crashed helis or even working helis. no vehicles that you can drive in warz yet but its possible it will be added. both are fun games if you enjoy a very realistic zombie survival game.

you dont have to buy Dayz. its a mod for Arma operation arrowhead. so its free as long as you own that Arma. you could own Arma OA and not even get the Dayz mod if you wanted. unless they have begun to make the standalone Dayz that i heard rumors of.

Buying DAYZ in the sense you only buy ARMA to play it.

you had said not to buy dayz. i bought arma 2 OA before i heard about dayz from a friend so no i did not buy arma 2 OA for dayz, just ran into dayz and found it quite fun.
