Long ago, when PC gaming was just coming to the masses, with games such as Halo 2, DOOM 3, Half life 2, TRON 2.0, and many more, a small game was released by a small company who made tech demo's, a game called "Far Cry", which was based on a technology the developed called CryEngine, which allowed for realistic terrain generation, as well as long view distances. After the game became a rather large success, a sequel was discussed, but resulted in a falling out between Ubisoft and Crytek. As crytek owned CryEngine , Ubisoft was directed to make there own engine based of its original codebase, this new engine, dubbed "Dunia", which debuted with a new not so sequel to Far Cry, Far Cry 2, an African adventure where you took on an unstable country in search of an arms dealer, known only as "The Jackal". At the same time, Crytek had several new games under its belt, along with a new version of its engine, known as CryEngine 2, which was well received, and later became CryEngine 3, Debuting with Crysis 2. After several rewrites, and technological breakthroughs, Ubisoft finally announced Far Cry 3, a game which would take elements from both of its predecessors and combine them into a single new game, originally about a journalist, and now about the young Jason Brody, a 4.0 Graduate, who loves extreme sports. Both companies have enjoyed continual profit and prosperity from the single game, Far Cry, and being little known, and little played, was the cornerstone from which many games were made.

And to answer your questions, the original games title came from the ending seen, in which the entire mission had been code names "Project Far Cry". Its also meaningful that all 3 games take place a Far Cry from a civilized world, as all 3 games take place in lawless dangerous environments, knee deep in rebels and mercenaries.
