1900 years ago people in central europe (where the story originated) didn't wear shoes.
The story is 316 years old, first published in Histoires ou contes du temps passé.

In the actual story she had gone several nights in a row and danced with the prince every night, getting away before midnight. On the last night, he smeared tar on the stairs and one of her shoes got stuck in it, so she could either stay there and be caught, or take the shoe off. Guess which one she chose?

The Grimm brother wrote Cinderella, not Disney.

Though both versions are very different, the slipper falls off in both.
