I think it is so that the coldness from the ice would not transfer to the metal and make the inside even colder, putting less strain on the heating source. It is possibly not on ice over water, or if it is than maybe it is extremely thick. This is just my theory idk if I am actually right or not.

yeah, you are. if the entire thin were just laying on the ice it could easily make it 10 degrees colder, maybe more

i think they're ski's so something can tow it along the snow faster, it doesn't walk because it doesn't show any joints or pivots in which the legs can turn and move.
