So the problem lies within the way one defines of what marriage is and what it is supposed to do. The Church has a clear explanation what it is and for. The problem is that past 30 or 40 years society has been trying to redefine marriage and the Church disagrees with it because it shows the selfishness of society. The church will never change it's views and has nothing to do with Science. The reason the Pope spoke to the French Bishops about it is that it will bring the fall of a civilization. In a gay marriage there is nothing there to build upon, and it is not just in gay marriages, in heterosexual marriages the same problem arises, the wants of the individuals are what is important to them. In other aspects of our society it is clear people say "If it does not affect me why should I care" This is the reason we have poverty, there are poor and homeless people in our own country (the U.S.) sorry foreigners but you can relate too) ) Look at Detroit, New York, L.A., Cleveland, Atlanta there are millions who are below poverty line and few people are out there willing to help but when an earthquake or tsunami hits some shit-hole third wold country people have their wallets out and sending billions to rebuild another country. The reason why is because they do not really want to but it will look bad on them if they do not jump on the bandwagon and they get labeled as a BAD person. The Church is standing up for the sanctity for marriage because if they let "this one thing" slide they might as well turn back on all of their core beliefs, because if you don't stand for anything you fall for everything.
