And you can thank it all to this mofo here!
No, really, ever since Quake 1 became the first competitive multiplayer shooter that had keyboard AND mouse support, it practically revolutionized the basic FPS controls.
I can barely imagine the "d'oh!" people back then felt when they realized they can live without the arrow keys! I know I did that with Quake 2, when I was 7 or 8.

Just to point out, those keys are used by some gamers, who play shooters.
Personally, I redirect my keys to my numerical keyboard, or I game using the arrow keys and the keys around it.
Then again, you also have many strategy games, in which the ctrl+b and the like is often used.
For example, in Star Craft II, Wings of Liberty, you use, aside the commands to open the building tabs, many keys to select which building you want, or to quickly move to a specific building, or unit group.
FPS gamers use only a very small amount of keys, because they only need a few, where strategy gamers often make use of their entire keyboard if they want to play efficiently and quickly. A key pressed is time saved. Because just imagine the amount of time you needed if you wanted to build every building using your mouse, without moving your map with keys, while ordering every unit to either patrol, attack, or attack-move by constantly returning to the attack menu with your cursor.
No offense meant to any type of gamer out there, since I play shooters, strategy, economical and console games, and enjoy all of them. I just wanted to point this out.

i use the heel of my hand, pinky side for L-CTRL. hurts less, in my opinion.
I have small hands, so I can't reach CTRL without contorting my pinkie painfully. I use crouch more often than sprint, so I usually remap that to shift and just don't sprint.
