Yes, its pretty useless against a horde. Forcing the zombies to the ground one by one is probably the best way to go, you'll get the advantage, and the chances to get bitten is low.

It' the same basic concept. use a melee weapon whenever possible, and save the guns for the big shit.

Never use guns against zombies in a zombie apocalypse. 1st. More will hear the shot. 2nd. If you are so lucky to get a hold on a gun and some ammo, then use it for hunting. The zombies will try to eat you, so you are the one who will go hungry!
But of course, use it if that's the only way out.

I'd prefer hammers. Longer reach typically, better for head trauma, more useful in most situations, can be immediately used for repair and even breaking in to locked areas. Sharpen the nail-removing end to a razor point and you have a nice hunting tool too.

Slower though. If it gets lodged in a head, you might have trouble getting it out before being eaten.

Note that because the concussive force causes the skull to fracture and dent rather than full on smash like a pumpkin, it won't be getting caught in any corpses. Also, slower but WAY more effective than a knife will be.

Thats why i like my big, razor sharp machette sitting in my garage.
