Christmas was invented to compete with a pagan holiday.
Christianity wanted to attract more followers and the pagans loved their holidays so Christianity decided they would put their own holiday on top of the pagan one. Kind of a dick move actually lol.

Christmas started out as the pagan winter solstice festival, so plenty of people celebrated it before the birth of christ

"Christmas" has nothing to do with Jesus Christ. The holiday of Christmas originates from an old roman celebration called Saturnalia. This day was supposed to honor one of their gods, Saturn. This holiday, along with a number of other pagan holidays/festivals, were celebrated around late December as well. Jesus wasn't even born on the 25th of December. The bible makes no mention of an exact date, only describing the type of weather which indicates it was nowhere near 25th of December.

Saturnalia was adopted by Christendom overtime because they wanted to convert more people and pagans into "Christians". To make this easier, pagans were allowed to take with them some of their traditions, like Saturnalia, easter (dedicated to the goddess Esther/Eostre), new year and even the "Christian" cross symbol along with many more pagan traditions.

Interesting stuff if you ask me ;)

One can celebrate christmas as a commercial holiday and not just a religious one.
(not trying to offend; just making an observation)

considering the Christians stole Christmas from the Druids (they just renamed the winter solstice), and the druids were around thousands of years before the "birth of Christ", they were probably celebrating the winter solstice.

Acually the scandinavian country's started christmas (saturnalia) it was originally on the darkest night of the year to remind people of the spring by bringing in a tree with something green on it.
