when did oil become highly unprofitable?

Before you've even thought about tapping those reserves you're going to need permission to get that **** out of there. Now, oil companies don't have the best of reputations when it comes to pumping oil out of pristine environments, for example the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. To get this permission you're going to need to spend millions or billions of dollars on a campaign big enough to warrant the permission. You're going to have greenpeace, save the whales, save the penguins and save the iceburgs on your back, and until you placate them, you're getting no oil. Also there are masses of protocols, treaties and political stances on anything to do with that place, so you're going to be having international conferences with countries across the world all wanting a bit of your oil.

Secondly: accessibility. We're talking about the southernmost spit of ice in the world. Shipping huge tankers full of oil, while being careful about it is going to cost millions with every single trip. (You're going to need tight security too). You're going to need people to live down there, so that means somehow generating electricity, shipping food, water, shipping waste out of there and disposing of it safely. The employees will need to be paid decent cash for living out there.

Thirdly: getting the oil. While not stepping on rare lichen, you've got to pump whatever oil you can find, using machinery that can withstand those temperatures and not break, stop moving or freezing at any time. What's that? You've got to ship parts out too? Make that a few million more.

There are better places to get oil than Antarctica.

the less oil we have in the rest of the world ( so pretty much as time goes on ) the higher the price of oil, eventually in the near future the cost of setting up will be outweighed by the profit from selling oil at the extremely high price it will be at that point in time, maybe not now, but soon, and if you could garner a relatively small amount of money, you could discover where most of the oil is, and sell it to the oil company's for a high price, you don't necessarily have to drill it yourself, just need to discover it
