Girls playing video games wasn't something usual, hell, it still isn't to quite a few people. My sister just simply mentions that she plays skyrim (or posts something related to skyrim) on her facebook, and gets a combination of guys going "oh that's so hot" or "lol stop acting like you play video games."

THAT's where the attention seekers come from, because they latch onto a noticeably rising trend. And then once that trend goes from the unusual to the usual, the attention seekers will all but disappear, often moving onto the next trend.
