Prepare for a novel.
My worst fear, the thing that keeps me up at night staring at the ceiling, isn't heights, isn't clowns, rejection, pain, loneliness or even death. I fear oblivion.
"Well, Anon, isn't that just death?"
No. It's not. Death is a peace to me, something I somewhat look forward to. But oblivion means that it's not just me, the speck that doesn't matter. It's humanity, the speck, that doesn't matter. Because no matter what humanity does, no matter how great it is, it will end. And the greatest: Socrates, Voltaire, Einstein, it won't just be them that will be forgotten. It will be every smile and every love, every pain and every fear that ever existed and ever will exist. It will be swallowed up by solar winds and the inky blackness of space. Forgotten as if it was never remembered.
But even the void, even the eternal darkness that clings to our souls even after death, is somewhat of a peace to me. Because amongst the war and violence, the hate and pure fury, there will come a time that all that will exist will be the peace of nature and space. Where we all go back to our beginnings as the dust we came from, and that dust will be thrown into a star and back to its beginnings. And even after time and space, the infinite nothingness will be like the calm after a storm, so startlingly quiet that we are fear it.
It's the fear I cradle up inside. It's behind every person's smile, because everyone knows the smile is worthless.
So in the darkness, when I stare at the lonely stars, fearing and wanting oblivion so bad it hurts, sometimes I just turn inside and ask myself.
"What is the cost of our short breath of existence, our ticket to oblivion?"
And all I get is a quiet answer, barely under the breath of the wind:
"It's about tree-fiddy."
inb4 cool story bro.
