When the world ends, history majors will become much more important. They're the ones that will probably help piece things together and rebuild things like they were. It's English majors that will never be useful.

What if the history majors all somehow forget how to write in some freak accident and only the english majors can transcribe what they say. I realize this is a ridiculous hypothetical, just trying to justify english majors

No one really knows who Homer was, or whether or not he actually existed as we know him. People say it was just a bunch of different authors' works that were accidentally attributed to a ghost writer.

Any language student will be useful in structuring and interpreting any remnants of the past civilisation with the history majors. Also entertainment in a post apocalyptic world, not to mention maintaining a structured communication system would be very important to have an advanced society.

Well to be the devil's advocate, an English major is more than just Shakespeare it is comprehension, understanding, and communication. Those three things are very important to society and are really rather difficult, where would the physics major be if his English teacher had not taught him how to convey his ideas easily to people who may not have as firm of a grasp on the concepts as they do.

Comprehension, understanding, and communication are basic human instinct, they aren't taught by an english teacher as you would suggest. As I stated in a different post, literature and art are beautiful additions to mankind's story, but pale in importance next to Science.

so your telling me that every book is just as easy to understand as the next? there is a skill to communication, not every one can teach. that is like saying that any one can figure out quantum relativity. explaining things is not an instinct, basic communication is an instinct. Have you ever read a paper by a scientist that was not proofread by some one who specializes in language. I have and i can tell you it is much easier to understand complex topics when some one who is good at language assists the writer.

At that point literature itself is the problem; effective communication is only as effective as an author can articulate it to be, and how well someone can decode and make sense of an amalgamation of letters that form words and sentences.
If literature were succinct and to the point, as basic as possible to avoid confusion, then there would not be the problem of misinterpretation.

You bring up an excellent point one few people can grasp, and for that I congratulate you.
There is a perfect language, math, but if we all began to use this language and no other we would lose what people define as our "humanity" and simply become machines. I do agree with you though on the imperfection of language, but it is not something i can see a plausible escape from.
For sporting such an effective argument I would like to offer my FJ friendship.

Art isn't always useless. But then again, that depends on what you consider art. Art can be beautiful, and/or evoke emotion. But he same is with some literatture, it can be beautiful and evoke emotion. Through the years art has made people do things, think over things, question things. There was art, poster ect to get people to contribute to a cause or a war. Photography, photoshopping can be consider art making, since essentially it's the same things and it's not fugly, scarred, wrinkled, blemished cover models on magazines that get people to buy their products. If you buy a game, some good concept art wouldn't hurt and might in fact get the message arcoss what the games about, making you interested. "Don't judge the book by it's cover", but a cover that suits your interests would probably tempt you more. Most beautiful things around you, someone has sat and thought through how it would look like.
Also, modern art. I know it doesn't loook impressive. Like the white background with black dot on top and then we call it art blah blah blah. I can fully understand that, and that today it doesn't make much sence to do that art anymore. That is because today it doesn't hold the same value (therefor I agree, people should let it go), but at the time it came out, it was revolutionary. Art has developed, and what happen under the some of the modern art era was that they (marcel Duchamp for exampel), started questioning the definition of art, because there was none. A straight red line on a white backround was critized of some critics, but what they had done was teh essenrials of art. the basic colours and horisental, vertical lines. You can't say art is useless without giving your definition of it. A boy who recreates the titanic made of millions of toothpicks can be art. But then there's always those that consider something of someone famous art. Picassos autograph ≠ Art. But that's the case with most famouse people today, they can do **** all.

Modern Art is ******* on a canvas. I agree, Duchamp made a prime example of modern art by literally presenting a urinal as a piece of art, and calling it "modern art". That being said, I can't see how any art major could argue their importance in some kind of apocalyptic scenario...

That ultimately depends on where you go in art. Architects can make tons of money. I have a friend who is studying to be an architect and he makes some really nice schematics and drawings. Now that I'm thinking about this, I wish America's cities looked beautiful like Dubai.

History majors will have a lot to contribute.
You can use histories war tactics in post apoc battles, or rebuild a library with the history you have, or even be seen as an elder in post apoc tribes because you knew what came before.

To all the people saying "history major will be most important for rebuilding society" don't forget that for the most part in a post apocalyptic world the worlds gonna consist mainly a massive steroid junkies leading gangs of violent cannibalistic psychopaths against slightly less violent cannibalistic psychopaths, and most the decent non-cannibalistic groups will be killed off pretty damn fast.
