As I say everytime I see this content, this episode took place in 1999. Before LOTR were movies (and therefore the names were not as recognizable to the masses) and pokemon knowledge was largely limited to the school yard. The guy even says if he still had his phone a friend he would've called his young niece. It is not something he should've known by any means.

even if it is before the movies, All three books are massive pillars on which the fantasy genre stands. Not knowing who the **** frodo is is like not knowing who the **** Pikachu is.

Yes, but the 90's was still in the times when fantasy was considered a "geeks only" genre (A trend that was changed largely by the movies, as it was). Your average Joe usually wasn't going to know much more about LOTR than it is a book series that existed.
