Reminds me of that Google "Take action" thing which is going on right now. Google says "Protest!" but doesn't say what exactly people should protest against, except that there is a supposedly secret meeting where governments will supposedly do bad things.

Result: People protest.

My theory: Protesting is a natural reflex that can be triggered by pretty much anything. You don't even have to know what exactly you are protesting against.

Except that the hints of what to protest (internet censorship) has a definite precedent. We know the government wants to do this, and we know they'd rather do it without the involvement of internet users or the people at large. So simply knowing of it, is enough for us to get rustled.

Not much is needed to invoke this reaction when every failed attempt at internet censorship is immediately followed with a repackaged version of the same **** they just tried passing.

Yes, and that is what Google is counting on. That's why they don't provide any details about what "the government" is supposedly doing, or else people would put 1 and 1 together and realize that this is only about Google's business interests and not about the rights of individual users. So they hope that they just have to say "censorship" to induce some pavlovian reaction. And it works.
