I'm not a genius in all this, but your finger print is like just raised parts of your fingers and when you put the ink on your finger it lives the print, because some parts of it are raised and same with just finger prints on a window it's just the oil on your skin that's on the raised parts. Because the atoms of oil on your fingers are just sitting on top of your skin. Your skin secretes oil constantly so you have an excess. When you touch something the excess oil, that isn't in the grooves of your finger print, gets left behind. It works because the ridges in your fingerprint are really deep and the layer of oil that floats on your skin goes up and down with the ridges in your finger, not across the top of the ridges.
