It is suggested that our eating rituals are sadistic, as though they're something torn out of fiction. The character in the picture finds our approval of something so surreal to be peculiar, and the metaphor is used to illustrate this. The character is essentially saying "this is like mythology", implying there's something other-worldly about the brutality involved.

As In that is akin to what one might find in mythological/ancient times. This is correct to say because our knowledge of such things of ancient time can only be justified through interpretation of left over evidence. All other information has passed over and combined with the realm of myths.
