or, use the gun, use all your arrows, run down to your last sword, attach it to the barrel like a sword/bayonet thingy and fucking slaughter EVERYTHING

Well, if you attach the sword to the gun before going to shoot shit, less chance of accidentally using it and dying.

and, in case of jams, it also serves as an emergency alternative in cqc

I think this is the thought process of the Borderlands developers.

You know not all swords are sharp on both sides right? Besides, that type of sword is mostly meant for stabbing rather than slashing. And it looks like a display sword.
