This is one thing I never understood. How was the Empire bad? Did they actually do anything bad in the films (excluding games and the prequels)? All I remember is that they were tracking down Princess Leia, a known terrorist (any government would do this if the country was under threat). Short of killing Luke's family and shizzle (which is logical considering they had known connections to the droids they were looking for that contained the vital data, so assumed they too were terrorists), the Empire really did nothing wrong.

The only point I realised the Empire was meant to be evil was when the big yellow text floating in space told me "the Empire is evil".

It's not the empire itself that is evil. It's the man on top who is. The Empire is no more then the faceless epitome of law and order. But the Emperor, or "Darth Sidious", embraces the powers of darkness to enforce this said law. This makes the Empire, as we Dungeons and Dragons nerds say, "Lawful Evil". While they bring law and order to the galaxy, they're choking the **** out of people to do it.

Did you forget the part where they destroyed Alderaan?

look at it from this point of view. if you consider the rebels terrorists, Alderaan was their home base. most of the funding for the rebellion came from Alderaan. if you compare it to modern days, while not a good example, that would be like nuking Iraq to stop Al Qaeda, or wherever they come from
