JK Rowling answered this once, it had something to do when the wizarding world became secret from the non magic world they wanted to go at there own pace. since they had magic they were able to solve many of there problems and didnt have the need for more advanced technology. since they could protect themselves with spells and fly with brooms they dont need fire arms and cars.

STORYTIME!

I was once watching Potter Puppet Pals, and I was watching the Trouble at Hogwarts episode, where Harry, Ron and Hermione shoot Voldemort with AK-47s. I think to myself, "Wait, so why didn't they actually just do that in the first place?"
My father, who was allegedly sleeping on the couch behind me, wakes up and says, "BECAUSE MUGGLE WEAPONRY IS USELESS AGAINST DARK MAGIC. IDIOT."

I legit got schooled by my father in Harry Potter.

Second, HP is set in the 90's, therefore not 21st century

Yes, it is in 1999.

How's that supposed to work out, anyway? The started 1990ish, so +8 would still be 1998.

In HP 5 Harry writes Sirius a letter in which he writes that Dudley destroyed a Playstation, a new console. The PSOne came out around 1996, if I'm not mistaken.
#90 to #83 - braindamagedteen (11/17/2012) [-]
Harry is born in 1980,he gets his letter when he is 11(1991) and by HP 5 the year is 1996.

no no no, the book is centered around the time when Nearly Headless Nick says its the 500 anniversary of his beheading which was in 1492 or vice versa, dont know which book it was in

Alright. everyone is going on about how easy it'd be to kill them with guns and **** . but just remember. The unforgivable curses are unforgivable if you use them on wizards or muggles only. So, you can one hit an Ogre with a killing curse, among other things, so long as they aren't resistant to it. and even then, it's magic, so you can do so much more with it.

Weapons do not feed from clips, they feed from magazines.

#73 to #70 - colonelroymustang (11/17/2012) [-]
They aren't the same thing, a clip is a device used to feed ammunition into a magazine, a magazine feeds the ammo into the weapon.

I was a bit forefront about it, to be honest. It's really a very common mistake and nothing to be ashamed of if you aren't around weapons often- but coming from a family where everyone's been in the military and should know the difference...

I agree
User avatar #43 - blackcomet (11/17/2012) [-]
I think it's more for style then anything else.
Plus a regular gun wouldn't kill a lion, what do you think it's going to do to a Cave troll? And wands are easier to carry.
User avatar #53 to #43 - ironsoul (11/17/2012) [-]
A fifty cal hollow point will make a lions head literally explode from the impact. Pretty sure a salvo of that will put a cave troll down. Also, you can shoot it from a mile away, and not wait until it is close enough see you.
User avatar #54 to #53 - blackcomet (11/17/2012) [-]
A wand is still easier to carry.
User avatar #55 to #54 - ironsoul (11/17/2012) [-]
and much shorter range. But yes, a wand makes a good back up weapon.
#56 to #55 - blackcomet (11/17/2012) [-]
I can still miss my target sniping, but a wand has lightning and pretty lights and **** . With a ******* built in feature of making grilled cheese.
User avatar #61 to #56 - trooperatezeroate (11/17/2012) [-]
What the **** ? If you see a cave troll you would want to take that thing out way before it got in range of the wand, so the fifty is the better one even if it was in range of the wand.
User avatar #62 to #61 - blackcomet (11/17/2012) [-]
I'm not a wizard so I don't know, but I would think they have some wizard **** that could at least trap the troll and kill it or teleport it to a reserve somewhere. You have to remember they have been using magic even before guns were invited.
User avatar #59 to #56 - ironsoul (11/17/2012) [-]
They miss wand targets in the book all the time. Also, I don't need to speak to shoot, or remember the fancy words, I can shoot as fast as I can pull the trigger. In the amount of time it takes a person to say "avada kedavra" I can empty an entire clip of hollowpoint ammunition into their chest.
User avatar #60 to #59 - blackcomet (11/17/2012) [-]
That's fighting wizards. I was talking about trolls and other magical beings. I can't fire a .50 cal rapidly, but a nice hand gun would be a good back up for a wizard. Unless the ************* use their wands to deflect **** like they always do.
User avatar #79 to #60 - trooperatezeroate (11/17/2012) [-]
you do know that for one to deflect anything that has been fired at them wizards have to hear it first right? So even if this was a battle against an enemy wizard they would have to hear the shot first, and then do the motions or say the words for the spell they want and not mess it up. Seeing as this is a troll we are talking about here I would see it safe to assume it wouldn't have the brain power to become a wizard in the time it took you, me or anyone else to shoot it.
