First of all, Holocaust is a noun, not a verb, and while The Holocaust was indeed a thing, A Holocaust is: Destruction or slaughter on a mass scale.

My esteemed German colleague has expressed his wish to further support your claim by adding that the word 'holocaust' is a word borrowed from a German word for 'inferno' with a further explanation which he has described as "total destruction by fire". He further says (somewhat needlessly, I think) that the capitalization in 'Holocaust' makes it a proper noun, meaning that it identifies a very specific noun; in this case a rather horrific time period during the Third Reich.
