Fallout 3 was developed by Bethesda.

New Vegas was developed by people who actually knew what they were doing, so while it's still a shoddy shantytown of code and glitches, the content is much better.

If you prefer shooters with RPG elements, go FO3.
If you prefer RPGs with shooter elements, go FNV

Fallout 3 was good, but so was FNV
While F3 had the story line you really got into, and the hidden valuables in the DLC's that were a pain in the ass to find, it was worth it. When you become over powered in this game, you're only OPed in some areas, while others maintaine difficulty. FNV's story line is longer and the DLC's give you a lot more loot, yet that loot doesnt quite make you OPed it just gives you an extra bit of support, an extra leg to stand on (excluding Lonesome Road). FNV really connects you with the DLC's story, and tells you things from the past residents, or even backstory. That is if you look hard enough.

To counter that, I just made a save right before entering the final Quest. Then once i finished, I reloaded the save and just played the other parts of the game from there.
