Neither are kick-start motorcycles, such as most dirt bikes. Even a lot of older cars would not be affected by an emp.

Just going to throw this out there from reading all these comments related to this first comment. alternators have diodes built inside them. diodes are oneway semiconductors that turn the ac current from the alternators into dc current to charge the battery, diodes will fry from an emp blast. so that said. The alternators will fry but can be fixed if One could find a diode lying around, One of the same voltage and amperage readings other wise it will fry again, I would recommend checking old crt tvs or other high voltage related stuff to find a diode to find, or salvage a bridge rectifier they can support the current, but only the bridge rectifiers that connect to the main.

Would they be protected because of the metal covering the alternator? (i.e. the car body)

Could not say for sure. I was thinking and pondering over that. But since the tires are rubber the grounding would be poor if anything so most likely it would not help, unless you ground it, plus ground the alternator for extra precautions, overkill is a good thing when it comes to protecting this of stuff.

they have spark plugs, though, right, and alternators, all of those would be destroyed, however, they are fairly easily replaceable.

Spark plus would not be necessarily effected, and easily rebuilt if they are. And a large amount of dirt bikes do not have lights, such as the one pictured above(mine), so no alternators, even if they do have alternators, that would not be required to get the bike running. Even smaller bore bikes having only an electric start(such as a crf230l) can be started by popping the clutch if the electrical system is fried. Though, as dirt bikes modernize, they are switching to Fuel Injection, which does require electrical systems to be running properly. However, most two cycle engine, still use carburetors. Which would not be effected at all.
